In short: Invisalign is a clear aligner system that moves teeth gradually using a series of custom plastic trays, each worn for about one to two weeks. Aligners are worn around 20 to 22 hours a day and removed to eat and brush. Treatment commonly takes from several months to around two years depending on the case. Integrity Dental offers Invisalign at its Baulkham Hills and Dural practices.

Who Invisalign suits

Aligners work well for many cases of crowding, spacing and mild to moderate bite problems. They're popular with adults who don't want visible braces at work, and with teenagers who'd rather not have brackets through high school.

They aren't right for everyone. Some complex bites, significant jaw discrepancies and certain tooth movements are more predictable with fixed braces or specialist orthodontic care. If that's you, we'll say so and refer you to a specialist orthodontist.

The commitment it takes

Invisalign only works if the aligners are in your mouth. That means wearing them 20 to 22 hours a day, taking them out only to eat, drink anything other than water, and clean your teeth. Patients who leave them out for long stretches get slower, less predictable results.

You'll also need retainers once treatment finishes. Teeth naturally try to move back, and retainers are what keep the result. Most people wear them at night long term.

Invisalign or braces?

Both move teeth well in the right cases. Aligners are nearly invisible, removable and easier to clean around. Braces are fixed, so compliance isn't an issue, and they can handle some movements aligners find difficult.

We'll show you the trade-offs for your teeth specifically, rather than steering everyone the same way.

How Invisalign treatment works

  1. Consultation. We examine your teeth, bite and gums, take X-rays if needed and talk about what you want to change.
  2. Records and planning. We take records of your teeth and plan the movements. You'll see a digital preview of the expected result before you decide.
  3. Written quote. You receive the fee, the estimated number of aligners and the likely treatment time in writing.
  4. Fitting. Your first aligners are fitted, and small tooth-coloured attachments may be bonded to some teeth to help the aligners grip.
  5. Check-ins. You change aligners at home and visit us roughly every 6 to 10 weeks so we can check progress.
  6. Retainers. When treatment finishes, we fit retainers to hold your new smile in place.

Recovery and aftercare

Each new set of aligners can feel tight for a day or two. That pressure is the teeth moving and usually settles quickly. Some people notice a slight lisp for the first few days. Clean your aligners daily and brush before putting them back in, so food isn't trapped against your teeth.

Risks and limitations

Results depend on wearing the aligners as directed. Risks include tooth soreness, gum irritation, decay if hygiene is poor while aligners are worn, minor root shortening (which can occur with any orthodontic treatment) and teeth moving back if retainers aren't worn. Some cases need refinement aligners to finish. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Fees, health funds and payment plans

Invisalign fees depend on how complex the case is and how many aligners are needed. You'll get an exact written quote after your consultation and records. Interest-free payment plans are available, and some health funds with orthodontic cover contribute.
