Understanding the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is an Australian Government program designed to provide financial assistance for basic dental services to children and teenagers. Launched to promote better oral health among young Australians, the CDBS helps reduce the cost barrier for essential dental care, ensuring that children can maintain healthy teeth and gums from an early age.

Eligibility
The CDBS is available for children aged 0 to 17 years who meet certain criteria. To be eligible, the child must:

  1. Be aged between 0 and 17 years for at least one day of the calendar year.
  2. Be eligible for Medicare.
  3. Be part of a family receiving certain government payments, such as the Family Tax Benefit Part A or other relevant Australian Government payments.

Benefits and Services
Under the CDBS, eligible children can receive up to $1,095 in benefits for dental services over two consecutive calendar years. This amount can be used for a range of basic dental services, including:

  • Examinations and Assessments: Routine check-ups to monitor and assess dental health.
  • X-rays: Diagnostic imaging to identify issues not visible during a standard examination.
  • Cleaning: Professional dental cleaning to remove plaque, tartar, and stains from teeth.
  • Fissure Sealing: Application of a protective coating to the chewing surfaces of teeth to prevent decay.
  • Fillings: Treatment for cavities to restore the function and appearance of teeth.
  • Root Canals: Treatment to save a tooth with infected or damaged pulp.
  • Extractions: Removal of teeth that are beyond repair or causing overcrowding.

It’s important to note that the CDBS does not cover orthodontic treatments, cosmetic dental work, or any dental services provided in a hospital setting.

How to Access CDBS
Accessing the CDBS is straightforward. Here are the steps:

  1. Check Eligibility: Confirm your child’s eligibility by contacting Medicare or checking through your myGov account linked to Medicare.
  2. Make an Appointment: Schedule an appointment with Integrity Dental.
  3. Inform Us of your intention to use the CDBS: Let the us know that you wish to use the CDBS for your child’s treatment. We can then verify eligibility and discuss the treatment plan and costs with you.
  4. Consent to Treatment: You will need to sign a consent form before any treatment begins, acknowledging that you understand how much of the benefits will be used.

Important Considerations

  • Annual Cap: The $1,095 benefit cap is spread over two years. If the full amount is not used in the first year, the balance can be used in the second year, provided the child remains eligible. Unused benefits do not carry over to a new two-year period.
  • Out-of-Pocket Costs: If the dental treatment costs exceed the available CDBS benefits, you may need to cover the additional expenses. Discuss potential costs with us beforehand.
  • Private Health Insurance: If you have private health insurance, you can use it in conjunction with CDBS benefits, but you cannot claim both for the same service.

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule is a valuable program ensuring that Australian children have access to essential dental care. By understanding eligibility criteria and the services covered, parents can make informed decisions about their child’s oral health. For more detailed information or to confirm eligibility, visit the Australian Government Department of Health website or contact Medicare directly.
